How To Build Healthy Habits – Lifestyle

Healthy Habits Start From The Outside In.

Life can be crazy at times for all of us. I never realised just how important it is to build healthy habits with yourself until recently.

It took a few whirl wind situations in my life to really realise sometimes you need to just take a step back and prioritise yourself first.

Building healthy habits can be tough, as we may know what we need to do but actually doing it can be hard! – Saying it and doing it are two very different things lol!

We all know we should eat healthy but life has so many temptations and it’s just learning to control these, in all aspects of life not just eating.

This is something I am currently doing and I wanted to share my experiences with you, we all can make changes in our life to lead a better life and be happier and healthier I hope this blog post can help motivate you as I have been recently!

Healthy habits can start from the inside as well as the outside, you may think when I say ‘Healthy Habits’ I mean grab a piece of fruit instead of a chocolate bar but we are going to go a lot more in depth than just that! Some things that can REALLY affect us without even realising! It’s all about getting that balance in your life!

Recently I have been waking up and not checking my phone for at least an hour – let me tell you this was hard at first but it is ultimate bliss now!

Normally I would wake up and grab my phone before ANYTHING, check my online social media profiles as if I were reading a newspaper! Lol! Since coming away from my phone first thing it’s really helped me focus on what I need to achieve in the day, spend time to myself without my mind being filled with what everyone else is doing and concentrate on MY life. You must also remember social media first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening can be very depressing to some people, be carful what profiles you follow and remember everything you see/read online isn’t always true. You might thing people are ‘living their best lives’ but really we all only upload what we want other people to see. We all have bad days and that’s ok.

Try to stay grounded when it comes to social media and not to take it all too seriously. Remember YOU are in control.

Meditation is key, there are so many benefits from meditating I really recommend giving it a go! I really suggest doing this when ever you can, whenever I even have as little as 10 minutes free I like to use this time to practise mindfulness. Meditating has helped me feel less anxious, less stressed and so much calmer with myself and my emotions.

Take some time AWAY from your phone, this is one I am still learning to do! It is so easy to spend hours on end on your phone without even realising, I mean everything is on our phones right …?

Does any one else have a major panic if you leave the house and you haven’t got your phone? I know I do! I find myself running back home wondering where I placed it as I just couldn’t function my day without it!

Recently I switched back to using a pen and paper diary rather than relying on my phone to note everything down, I love the Erin Condren planners, that I spoke about in my previous blog post

I find it better to physically write things down and create tasks on pen and paper rather than using your phone all the time.

Try to wake up at the same time everyday! Or near enough the same time daily! I tend to wake up in between 5-6am each morning. And 7-8am at the weekends. To some people this might seem so early! But you know what they say …. ‘early bird catches the worm’ I like to make the most of my day and wake up slowly without being in a major rush! These days it just feels like there is not enough hours in the day, so waking up slightly earlier really does help!

Getting enough exercise and fresh air is essential, a 20 minute walk can really help you feel so much better. I went though a phase in my life where I was suffering with not knowing how to deal with situations appropriately and I would find myself getting worked up and sat at home crying all the time (firstly, you NEED to cut these people out of your life who make you feel like this.) I started to take myself outside the second I started to feel upset or feel like I was getting myself into a downward spiral. I would get my coat on grab a big pair of sunglasses and walk. Walk and walk and walk until my problems walked away with me really! It really helped give me time to think about things logically and not get myself worked up. Getting out of the house where other people could see me, stopped me from wanting to cry or be sad over silly situations.

Every morning I would get up and go for a walk, and even do this in the evenings too. It helped me so much! I ended up going for walks with friends so not only we were getting exercise we were talking and catching up too! Beats just going for drives and ending up at Mc Donald’s or something! Lol!

My job now includes lots of walking so that is great it has helped me feel so much better in myself! I used to hate the rain (I still do) but there is something very cleansing about walking in the rain!

I also recently have got an Personal Trainer, I will be attending 3 times a week for the first 5 weeks, I will let you guys know how I get on!

Add a bit of exercise into your week and you will feel so much better!

Self love! Get yourself into the habit of looking after YOU! Take some time out of your weekly schedule to give yourself a face mask a bit of pampering! It will make you feel amazing and it’s so great for your skin, look after you!

Ok so now let’s talk about the obvious …. healthy habits eating wise! When I started my personal training I also saw a nutritionist, she has really helped me plan nice healthy meals and teach me new ways of swapping certain foods. For breakfast I used to have cereal or some sort of diet shake. I now have a bowl of fruit, or over night oats, I make myself a really healthy slow energy releasing breakfast! It does make such a difference to the start of the day and you feel 10 times better knowing you are eating something healthy! There are so many great cook books with fantastic ideas and recipients online.

A few of the books I love are as followed:

Last but not least here are some top healthy habits to follow:

  • Get enough exercise even if it’s just a 20 minute walk! Do something!
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Spend time alone, meditate/be calm.
  • Have time away from your phone and social media – a little daily detox never hurt anyone!
  • Make a plan and stay on track, these will then become habits and naturally fall into place.
  • Do it for YOU!
  • Most importantly be patient, these things can take time and don’t happen over night!

I hope you have enjoyed reading this post, if you would like to share anything that you find helps you please let me know in the comments!
